One of the biggest revelations of the new episode of Put This On seems to be Adam’s re-education of viewers’ shoe tying habits.
I looked puzzled as he locked eyes with me and claimed “[he] just changed my life.” Truth of the matter is that I’ve never tied my shoes either way (reef knot or the granny knot).
I’ve never noticed that most people tie their shoes using the granny knot, and it most definitely looks ridiculous. Maybe it’s because you learn when you’re a kid and it just becomes automatic.
Anyways, I’m not sure what my way is called, but I think it’s vastly superior to both. It gives basically the same results of the reef knot, but with no looping and twisting as a plebeian might tie their shoes.
I demoed the first two methods (poorly, I might add, since this is the first time I’ve ever done them) and then my way. Basically, you start the knot the same way, then take your two ends, hold the “top” of two loose loops, bring them together asymmetrically, then pull the loose ends through one another. Yeah, that’s the best description I can give. Watch the video and maybe it will make more sense.
Who’s changing who’s life now?
(Seriously, I have never tied my shoes using one of these twisty-loopy styles. Am I in the minority here?)
